Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG HSM | A Review

Sigma's new 20mm F1.4 DG HSM is another step forward for the adaptable lens market, more significantly the Full Frame market. The widest fastest lens in Sigma's Art range to date promises more to come. With still no sign of a dedicated E-mount FE lens from Sigma, not surprising given the relative short life span so far from sony's newest mount. We hope to see more and more dedicated E-mount 3rd party AF lenses.

20mm can be considered as a wide angle lens in comparison to standard length 35mm & 50mm focal lengths, although considered to be landscape lenses newer aspherical element designs rendering straight line vertical and horizontal elements with little distortion. It will however create a strong perspective view which is expected from such a short focal length, which can be corrected easily in post as long as you have extra room around your main focal point that will be lost. It wouldn't be my first pick if I was going to shoot mostly portraits or people, but for a mix of tight alley ways, architecture, wide open spaces and a bustling city street, the 20mm can be a nice option.

Sigma 20mm F/1.4 A7r Adaptable Lens

Attached to my A7r the Sigma range of lenses Focus significantly fast which is a little surprising because not many 3rd parties focus quickly at all attached to my A7r, the fastest AF lenses are the sony-zeiss native E-mount (not surprising when they're designed for the camera) this is all bar eliminated with later firmware on selected models that utilise Phase-Detect auto-focus and not contrast detect AF like the A7r. The A7 would be significantly better.

Sigma 20mm F/1.4 A7r Legacy Lens

The Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG HSM comes in 3 mount types

- Sigma standard mount

- Nikon mount

- Canon mount

All in all this was a good pick for the A7r, it would be comparably better on Sony A series camera's with Firmware update 3.10.
