SMC Pentax lenses were manufactured in Japan from the early 70's, The super multi-layer coating is applied to the surface of the lens to reduce the affects of flaring and also create high sharp high contrast images. SMC is also applied to the Asahi Super Takumar range of lenses from the same manufacturer (Asahi Optic Co, Japan). Asahi and Pentax eventually split their partnership to leave only Pentax lenses.
