A7rII or Wait for the A7rIII
The A7rII was a major step forward in Sony's development of the A7 series camera's bring phase detect auto focus along with IBIS to the next generation, what do you think the A7rIII will bring? Larger sensor, dual slot memory card, longer battery life, will the A7riii be worth the wait for A7r series one users or will the anticipation of the A7rIII drop prices of the A7rii for those of us who want to move up.
It seems in today's camera race its all about Megapixels, the standout of any marketing campaign is always Megapixels, but do we really need a 60 or 80mp camera? For most of us, probably not. To be honest my 36mp full frame does everything I want in terms of image size, full 300dpi image quality at 40x60cm (16'x24'). You can even crop the image down and retain a high quality print. Depending on your specific needs and photography styles larger Megapixels can be a hassle especially when writing to SD cards in terms of processing speeds.
Does increasing megapixels also increase the need of high quality glass to compliment such a high resolution sensor, yes, especially Legacy lenses if you are going to use the extremely high MP count to its full extent.
The dual slot memory card is something I would like, especially for paid events to have a backup just in case, although this isn't a necessity, after all there was never a back up film?
Ohhhh longer battery life, an idea that has plagued the A7 series since its release, countless blog's, articles, stories and youtube video's. Honestly I don't think this will be addressed in the A7 series of camera's, they are deigned to be small, portable, light and overall somewhat vintage - modern look and feel to them. To have a larger in-built battery the camera would need to have a larger footprint, similar to adding the battery grip; But I'll just add the Battery grip anyway if I think I will need the extra battery life during a shoot. Having the option of NOT having the battery grip when it's not needed is better then having that large footprint all the time.
So what will Sony do?
